The Good and Bad about Gaited Horses
What I love about gaited horses is their temperaments. They are sweet and personable and most just want to please their owners. I have worked with many breeds and all though I love them all, the gaited horses are special in my heart.
What I don't like about the whole discipline with gaited horses, is that because they are so willing and kind, most people who get them do not know how to ride them correctly and do not care to find out. In all the disciplines of riding, you have to learn to ride correctly for that discipline. You have to learn to balance your body correctly, and balance your horse. It takes many years to become a good rider. Many lessons, many clinics and even working out at home to condition yourself to ride. Riding is a sport.
The gaited horses since they are so forgiving, have some of the worst riders. To have them correctly gait and use their bodies correctly to stay sound over time, you must help them to gait. You must balance your body, go the correct speed for their gait and help them to stay collected. The most common thing I see is the rider riding them past their gait so the horse is now trotting or pacing.
Many trainers in other disciplines do not understand the gaited horse and they will push them into a trot or pace. Years ago there were excuses but today we have you tube and so many gaited sites you can go on and learn about them and how to ride them. If your looking into getting a gaited horse please go my website or another gaited training site and see how to ride them correctly. Also it is very important that if the trainer you are working with has not worked with gaited horses, that they are open to learn about them and not work them as a regular trotting horse, otherwise you are most likely going to mess up their gaits and that is why you bought the gaited horse in the first place. https://www.majesticrider.com/gaited-training-videos-for-sa…
