Success in riding comes from many years of practice.
No matter what discipline you are in. Trail riding is just as hard as jumping and sometimes even more dangerous as there are no walls to stop your horse from running away. Some days are harder than others. Some days you will go home with bruises or broken bones.
Some days you may even come close to death. Those that are successful do not give up. They do not quit when it becomes hard. They think of their failures, as stepping stones to success. They keep trying, and the harder they try the better they become as riders.
Anyone who has been successful in a sport has had many failures. But people do not like to talk about failure. So you will not hear that they failed 1000 times before they figured it out but many did.
So next time your ride doesn't go well and you think of it as a failure. Instead of beating yourself up about it or blaming the horse, try to analyze what went wrong. What could you have done better.
If he spooked and you fell off, think what did he spook at, why did he spook? Did you see it coming but he didn't? You see different than he does. Our eyes are forward theirs are on the side of their head. Maybe you need to work on more desensitizing or working his extra energy off before the ride.
Did he spin? How can you stop that spin, by blocking his shoulders from moving that way, so work on moving his shoulders in the arena. Was he too spunky? So next time round pen him first.
Analyze what happen, come up with a plan, practice and try again. If you fail, repeat until you come up with the correct answer but don't just ignore what happen. This is a chance to become better and who doesn't want to be a better rider?
