Many times people have issues with their horses for acting up, spooking or not doing what you ask them to do. The more you understand the differences between horses and humans, the more things will make sense and you can help your horse to be better and more confident.
Take how horses see. They do not see like us, their eyes are on the side of their head, therefore they have more vision in each eye separately- monocular and less with two eyes-binocular as we do. So they see more things then us, and can see farther away but they do not have as much depth perception as we do and they cannot focus as well as we can on things that are far away.
That's why they think a ditch or puddle of water is a death trap because that is what it looks like to them. They do not see the bottom of the water like we can. When something far away is moving fast they cannot focus to see if it's a bike or a mountain lion, so your horse may be fine with bikes but spooks when one flys down the trail at you.
They also do not see colors as we do which also helps us to distinguish what things are. With this knowledge you can help your horse. You can guide him to stay calm when you know something fast is approaching that he cannot make out. You can let him paw at the water to check it's depth. Also his eyes do not adjust as fast from dark to light, such as going from the outside into a dark barn, so be patient and understand that what you see and he sees is different and try to help your horse instead of hindering him.
