Commander is a classic walking horse. Mellow, sweet, tolerant and smooth. You would never know he is just 8 years old. He doesn't react to much, spooks in place if he spooks and he has a puppy dog personality.
He does a 4 beat flat walk, running walk, saddle gait, rack and can canter. He is great going over obstacless and can even jump if you want.
You can see his soul through his eyes. He has the softest eyes. He is great with traffic, motorcycles, goats, cows, dogs, coyotes, bob cats, guns, crosses water, open gates, stands for mounting, you can even get off on the mounting block and he will sidle up to anything to help you get on.
He has a great foundation and knows all the ground work and arena work. He lunges nicely. Does lateral and vertical flexion. Very soft in the bridle and bends wonderfully around circles. He will make patterns, has a great whoa and backup. Leg yields, shoulder in, side passes, turn on forehand and haunches. Loads like a dream, good with farrier and vet. He has shoes on front, due to our rocks and barefoot behind.
He has been on dog field trials and trails, on the beach and in the redwoods and mountains. He handles terrain like a champ. He is fine if the other horse gets ahead which you can see on the beach video when my friend left us behind! He will lead or follow without issues. Rides alone and in groups well.
Due to his age, he would not be a good beginner horse unless you have a trainer you are working with.
He is a horse that you can have a great time on the trail with and then go home and put the kids on him and give them pony rides. He is very quiet in the arena. He also just loves attention and would hang out with you all day if he could. He is always eager to come out of his paddock and go to work. I set him loose to graze and he is very easy to catch.
Besides all these great things, he is well built and gorgeous!
